Karen Chan

Born and raised in Victoria, BC, Karen Chan began playing the piano at the age of 4 after being inspired by hearing her older sister practicing at home. During her upbringing in Victoria, Karen studied with Susan de Burgh at the Victoria Conservatory of Music.

Karen completed her Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance at the University of British Columbia under Prof. Mark Anderson.

She then earned her Master of Music in Piano Performance at McGill University's Schulich School of Music, studying with Prof. Kyoko Hashimoto. As the first prize winner of McGill's 2022-2023 Classical Concerto Competition, Karen performed Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 1 twice with the McGill Symphony Orchestra. She has also received masterclass instruction from renowned pianists such as Angela Hewitt, Jane Coop, and Robert Levin.

As a musician, Karen strives to convey meaning in every note she plays. She is an enthusiastic collaborator and enjoys performing in a variety of settings. Karen is a dedicated teacher who believes that everyone is capable of fully understanding and enjoying music. She believes in encouraging each student through an individualized approach which best meets each student's needs. Her goal is to empower others to perform with confidence and conviction.

In her spare time, Karen enjoys loves eating fruit and taking walks, playing video games, watching reality T.V.
