JAM BAND
Are you interested in playing in a band? The Jam Band is a hands-on introduction to “jamming” with other musicians, and all instruments are welcome. Students will learn how to apply their ear, their technique and knowledge of music theory to forms of music-making that don’t primarily rely on written notation, such as jazz and blues.
The series will provide instruction and guidance in the basic rhythmic, harmonic and melodic constituents of these music forms with the aim of developing a method for improvisation and engendering a life-long ability to participate in important unwritten musical traditions, traditions which emphasize spontaneity and individual creativity.
PAUL KEELING
Paul Keeling grew up in San Diego, California and was the youngest of five children in a musically gifted family. He began classical piano lessons in Los Angeles with Robert Turner at an early age and was a chorister in the acclaimed St. Paul’s Cathedral Choir of San Diego from the age of 7 to 18. In his teens he became interested in jazz music and studied jazz piano with Bob Holtz and Susan Muscarella, eventually becoming a regular player on the jazz scene in San Diego during the 1990’s. Paul moved to Vancouver in 2006, where he performs and records with his own quintet (www.paulkeeling.net).
He has recorded and produced two albums as bandleader, one of which, “Ancient Lights,” was nominated for Best Jazz Recording in 2015 by the Western Canada Music Awards.
He has taught many courses in jazz improvisation, jazz music theory and jazz appreciation for adult Continuing Studies programs in California, the U.K. and Canada, and has directed jazz ensembles at the high school level.
